Op-ed: Put an end to the electric deficit
The government has promised to not approve more renewable energy subsidies. But in order to preserve judicial decisions, those already decided on will not be axed. So in reality, cuts to the tariff deficit (the difference between the real and charged costs of power) will be minimal.
In fact, it is going to go up more than 5 billion euros. Electric companies are now bearing 24 billion euros in financing costs. So the government proposed a penalty on excessive household consumption by raising power bills through a tax called the "céntimo verde" and cutting power to big industrial consumers during times of peak use.
This is the framework for negotiating and changing a policy that lets us pay low prices for electricity during boom times and pay an arm and a leg for it during tough times.
