Wall Street pares gains, Amazon weighs


    NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks sharply pared gains on Monday with the Nasdaq Composite flat after rising more than 1 percent, weighed down by declines in Amazon.com and chipmakers.

    The Dow Jones industrial average gained 43.63 points, or 0.39 percent, to 11,162.12. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 4.59 points, or 0.39 percent, to 1,187.85. The Nasdaq Composite dipped 0.18 points, or 0.01 percent, to 2,507.23.

    Major indexes rose more than 1 percent earlier after data showed strength in industrial activity in the United States and China, fueling risk appetite.

    Amazon shares, down 2 percent, weighed on the Nasdaq and on retailer indexes.
