Wall Street up as recovery strengthens


    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rose at the open on Thursday after a fall in claims for unemployment insurance and a tick-up in the final reading for second quarter U.S. growth lifted confidence in the economy.

    The Dow Jones industrial average gained 67.51 points, or 0.62 percent, to 10,902.79. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose 7.75 points, or 0.68 percent, to 1,152.48. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 17.62 points, or 0.74 percent, to 2,394.18.

    A third report showed business activity in New York City rose in September for the first time in four months, further suggesting improvement in the economy.
