EU executive to hold 'political debate' on rule of law in Poland on January 13


    BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union's executive will hold a "political debate" on the rule of law in Poland on Jan.13, a spokesman said on Monday, after Brussels requested information on two laws passed by a new right-wing government in Warsaw that triggered criticism.

    The European Commission's spokesman Margaritis Schinas told a regular news briefing that the body was obliged by EU treaties to safeguard the rule of law in all 28 member states.

    Poland's new legislation on its top constitutional court and public media drew accusations that Warsaw was undermining democratic checks and balances in government powers.
