Police revise arrest figures after deadly Texas biker brawl
Besides those killed, 18 people were wounded in Sunday's pitched battle at a chain restaurant, which police believe involved five different gangs, according to the Waco Tribune-Herald.
Early Monday morning, Waco police had said on the department's Facebook page that they had arrested 192 people in connection with the shootout, but a few hours later they corrected that figure to 170.
"Those individuals are being charged with engaging in organized crime, in reference to the shooting at Twin Peaks (restaurant), which is a capital murder," Waco Sgt. Patrick Swanton said at a press conference.
The sergeant also said that five groups of bikers were involved in the shootout, but he refused to identify those gangs, saying "I am not about to give them the respect of mentioning their names."
The five different gangs had gathered at the Twin Peaks restaurant early on Sunday afternoon to discuss their differences, Swanton said.
The sergeant also said that the crime scene is "pretty secure" and that federal, state and local law enforcement officials are on hand to protect the site. He also said that all bodies have been removed from the area for forensic analysis.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission ordered the closing of the Waco outlet of the Twin Peaks chain for at least a week due to the danger it presents for the community.
The investigation is continuing inside and near the restaurant, where there are bullets, blood and other evidence. Police said that some civilian and police automobiles that are at the scene still have not been processed by law enforcement.
The shootout erupted shortly after midday on Sunday as a result of an argument that began in the Twin Peaks bathrooms and moved out into the restaurant and then spilled out into the parking lot the establishment shares with another restaurant.
Police who were already on the scene opened fire on some of the bikers to put an end to the violence, said Swanton on Sunday, adding that the actions of officers prevented the fight from escalating further and saved lives.
Numerous law enforcement and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the site, where police found chains, knives, clubs and firearms scattered around the area.
Some customers who were inside the two restaurants at the time of the gun battle managed to hide in the freezers, according to Waco's New Channel 25 television.
