Mexican security forces find drug tunnel under construction near border city

Tijuana, Mexico, Apr 8 (EFE).- Soldiers and federal law enforcement agents found a drug tunnel that was being built near the northwestern Mexican border city of Tijuana and arrested nine people, security officials said.

The partially finished tunnel was found Tuesday inside a building located on an alley near the Tijuana airport.

Criminal Investigations Agency agents obtained a search warrant and entered the building with army troops.

Nine men working on the cross-border tunnel were found inside the building, where an SUV used to haul dirt was parked.

The suspects and the vehicle were turned over to federal prosecutors.

Since the 1990s, authorities have discovered many clandestine tunnels along the border.

People traffickers and drug cartels often use clandestine tunnels to cross the vast U.S.-Mexican border, which runs 3,200 kilometers (1,988 miles).
