Police kill 3 gunmen in shootout in central Mexico


    Mexico City, Sep 4 (EFE).- Three suspected criminals were killed and a police officer was wounded in a shootout in a community outside Villa Gonzalez Ortega, a city in the central Mexican state of Zacatecas, officials said Thursday.

    State police engaged a group of criminals in a shootout during an operation in the community of Estancia de Animas on Wednesday, the Zacatecas state government said in a statement.

    Police units supported by a helicopter conducted the operation, which resulted in the seizure of firearms, ammunition and a vehicle, Zacatecas Public Safety Secretary Jesus Pinto Ortiz said.

    Police cordoned off the area so crime scene investigators could gather evidence, officials said.
