Guatemala's prisons chief arrested

Guatemala City, Sep 3 (EFE).- Guatemalan security forces on Wednesday arrested the director of the country's prison system on homicide and corruption charges, police said.

Edgar Camargo, who has been in the post for 18 months, was captured during a raid that was part of an operation headed by Guatemala's International Commission against Impunity, a police spokesman told reporters.

The official was taken into custody at his home in Mixco, a town in the central province of Guatemala, for the crimes of murder, accepting bribes and money laundering, the spokesman said.

Authorities have not released any more information regarding the charges.

"I'm calm and ready to appear before the appropriate judge," said Camargo in remarks to reporters as he entered the Torre de Tribunales courthouse in Guatemala City.
