Border Patrol seizes over 9 tons of marijuana in California
The 43-year-old suspect was arrested when he was stopped for a secondary inspection Friday by a team with drug-sniffing dogs at the San Clemente checkpoint.
Agents found 218 cardboard boxes containing bags of marijuana inside the truck's cargo compartment, the Border Patrol said.
This seizure "helps weaken the transnational criminal organizations that use our roads to conduct their illegal activities," Border Patrol chief patrol agent Paul Beeson said.
The driver, the truck and the marijuana were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration, which will continue the investigation.
The Border Patrol did not release the nationality of the driver.
