USGS reports 6.8 magnitude earthquake off Papua New Guinea


    SINGAPORE (Reuters) - A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Monday, the United States Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

    The USGS said the quake was recorded at 1:39 a.m. BST on Sunday evening, 81 miles east of the town of Wewak at a shallow depth of 10.4 miles. But no tsunami issue was issued for nearby areas.
