Hurricane Karl strengthens to category 2 storm

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Hurricane Karl strengthened into a category 2 storm in the southern Gulf of Mexico on Thursday as it headed across Mexico's offshore oil fields.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Karl was now packing maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour, giving it Category 2 status on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity.
