China quake toll rises to 589: report


    BEIJING (Reuters) - The death toll from a powerful earthquake in a remote region of China's Tibetan plateau has risen to 589, Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday.

    The agency quoted local quake-relief headquarters as giving the figure following Wednesday's quake, which toppled hundreds of homes and some schools in the mountainous area.

    The previous death toll had been 400, with thousands injured.
