Judge sets Allen Stanford trial for January 2011

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Thursday said accused swindler Allen Stanford's criminal fraud trial will start in January 2011, later than prosecutors had hoped.

U.S. District Judge David Hittner set the trial date at a hearing in federal court in Houston.

Stanford, 59, is accused of bilking investors out of $7 billion (4.3 billion pounds) with a Ponzi scheme cantered on fraudulent certificates of deposit (CDs) issued by his offshore bank in Antigua.
