Wall Street sinks on economic and bank worries



    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks extended losses on Wednesday, dragged down by fears of more credit losses to come for banks, while a further decline in consumer spending heightened anxiety over the impact from the recession.

    Highlights:

    * Banks led the way down, with the S&P financial index down 4.9 percent, while Dow component JPMorgan Chase lost 4.8 percent to $25.09. Citigroup tumbled 14 percent to $5.08.

    * The Dow Jones industrial average fell 232.49 points, or 2.75 percent, to 8,216.07. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost 24.93 points, or 2.86 percent, at 846.86. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 39.33 points, or 2.54 percent, at 1,507.13.
