Wall Street retreats as tech shares weigh



    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks retreated on Monday with the Nasdaq falling more than 1 percent as shares of big-cap tech companies declined, while uncertainty over the fate of a possible rescue plan for struggling automakers remained.

    * Investors were also looking ahead to an interest rate decision from the Federal Reserve later in the week, with expectations that the central bank will further cut rates.

    * The Dow Jones industrial average fell 48.26 points, or 0.56 percent, to 8,581.42. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 5.68 points, or 0.65 percent, at 874.05. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 15.16 points, or 0.98 percent, to 1,525.56.
