Stocks rebound as energy offsets auto worry

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rebounded on Wednesday as energy shares lifted by rising crude oil prices offset uncertainty over the fate of a proposed government bailout for U.S. automakers.

    * S&P briefly rose more than 1 percent within the last hour of the session in choppy trading.

    * Shares of Chevron jumped 4.7 percent to $79.12, but General Motors was down about 2.3 percent at $4.59, while Ford shares were little changed after falling more than 4 percent earlier.
