Stocks lose ground on auto aid unease

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average dipped on Wednesday, while the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 sharply cut gains as investors worried that a proposed auto industry rescue might run into hurdles in Washington.

    * Shares of GM dropped 5.1 percent, while Ford declined more than 4 percent.

    * Republican Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama said he intended to slow the auto bailout bill down. Before his comments, benchmark indexes had risen more than 2 percent.
