Stocks rally, helped by defensive shares



    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rose for a second day on Wednesday as investors flocked to shares of Coke and other companies that hold up well in recessions following another round of weak economic data and corporate outlooks.

    * According to the latest available data, the Dow Jones industrial average .DJI> rose 172.92 points, or 2.05 percent, at 8,592.01.

    * The Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX> gained 21.93 points, or 2.58 percent, at 870.74.

    * The Nasdaq Composite Index .IXIC> added 42.58 points, or 2.94 percent, at 1,492.38.

    * McDonald's, up 4.4 percent, and Coca-Cola, up 5 percent, pull the Dow higher.
