Wall Street extends gains on autos and GE

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks extended gains on Tuesday, sending the Dow and S&P 500 up more than 2 percent as investors grew optimistic about a rescue for the U.S. auto industry.

News that General Electric will maintain its dividend also buoyed sentiment, a day after Wall St. has its worst slide since the end of October.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 163.99 points, or 2.01 percent, at 8,313.08. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 19.83 points, or 2.43 percent, at 836.04. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 25.74 points, or 1.84 percent, at 1,423.81.
