When a disk is fragmented, its files are broken into numerous pieces which are scattered around the disk, rather than being stored contiguously. Therefore, the disk head requires more time to move around to different points on the disk to retrieve all the fragments of a file, thus also impacting on the energy consumed during the task.

The more fragmented a system, the more performance and data access times will be affected; a slow system is a drain on resources that in the long term can have a serious financial impact.

The tests performed showed that when Diskeeper was installed with InvisiTasking TM and I–FAAST TM fully enabled, the backup time was reduced by a clear 3hrs and 4min, without any backup failure, saving 0.26KWH of energy.
