Wall Street surges on Bernanke and easing credit strains



    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rose sharply on Monday after the Federal Reserve chairman backed more government spending to help the economy and credit market conditions showed further signs of improvement.

    The Dow Jones industrial average was up 413.21 points, or 4.67 percent, to end unofficially at 9,265.43, based on the latest available data. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 44.83 points, or 4.77 percent, to finish unofficially at 985.37. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 58.74 points, or 3.43 percent, to close unofficially at 1,770.03.
