Wall Street surges as bargains beckon

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks soared in late trading on Thursday, as investors snapped up beaten-down shares the day after Wall Street's worst day since the 1987 crash and consumer companies rose as the price of oil fell.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 395.37 points, or 4.61 percent, at 8,973.28. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 37.85 points, or 4.17 percent, at 945.69. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 89.38 points, or 5.49 percent, at 1,717.71.
