Kurion Launches Kurion Limited and Opens European Office toAccelerate Global Growth
Kurion, Inc., an innovator in nuclear and hazardous waste management, announced it incorporated Kurion Limited and opened an office in Warrington, England, to enable it to better support its growing operations in Europe. Phillip Ohl, who previously served as chief operating officer, was named senior vice president of European operations.
The expanded presence in the UK marks Kurion’s third continent and eighth facility; today Kurion has six engineering offices and technology-development facilities across the U.S. and a regional office in Tokyo. The company expects to hire a local team of engineers and project managers over the coming year to grow its European operations. Europe is home to nuclear and hazardous waste stemming from the Cold War and has new waste management needs as countries such as Germany begin dismantling commercial nuclear power plants.
“A European office gives Kurion a complete global footprint and allows the team to better serve nuclear and hazardous waste sites worldwide,” said John Raymont, Kurion founder and president. “I’m delighted to put Phil Ohl at the helm of our European operations. Phil brings extensive operational and development experience that will accelerate Kurion’s growth in this important region.”
Ohl has more than 25 years of engineering and design experience for nuclear and hazardous waste sites. Most recently, Ohl was chief operating officer in Kurion’s Richland, Wash., office. Previously, he was president and CEO of Vista Engineering Technologies, an engineering company that was acquired by Kurion in February 2014. Prior to founding Vista Engineering, Ohl was a recognized subject matter expert in corrosion, life extension, and tank integrity at the Hanford waste site and around the Department of Energy complex.
“There is a significant need for nuclear and hazardous waste solutions in Europe to manage waste stemming from the Cold War and the decommissioning of commercial nuclear power plants,” said Phillip Ohl, senior vice president of European operations for Kurion. “I’ve built my career working on a variety of projects for Hanford, one of the world’s largest nuclear waste sites, and I’m excited to offer this experience, along with the Kurion technologies, to support Europe’s waste-management challenges.”
Kurion CEO Bill Gallo commented on the news, “We see tremendous opportunity to bring Kurion’s suite of nuclear and hazardous waste treatment technologies to sites across Europe, particularly Sellafield, where we are currently assembling a GeoMelt® vitrification system in partnership with the UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory. Kurion’s new office puts an experienced team on the ground that can work more closely with site managers across the continent.”
