WSO2 Appoints Inaugural Board of Directors and Advisory Board; Group Represents a 'Who's Who' of Technology Leaders and Open Source Pioneers
WSO2, an open source technology company devoted to
building Web services middleware, today announced the formation of its
board of directors and advisory board. The group is comprised of
visionaries and top executives representing some of the most
influential companies in the technology and open source community.
As a developer of open source platforms for Web services, WSO2's
objective is to create a new middleware platform, designed from the
ground up, to support future Web-centric, community-oriented
applications and services. WSO2's first product, WSO2 Tungsten, is an
application server based on XML and Web services designed to support
Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). WSO2's products are being
developed in Java, C and PHP.
The WSO2 management team is comprised of individuals that have
been instrumental in establishing Web services and SOAP standards, and
longtime contributors to the Apache Software Foundation open source
projects. WSO2's governing bodies are comprised of leaders in the open
source community, as well as visionaries that have molded the
technologies that have inspired the company's creation.

Members of WSO2's Board of Directors are:
-- James Clark -- Thai Open Source Software Center, Founder --
Clark has contributed to the open source community for nearly
20 years. In the past 15 years, his work has focused on
SGML/XML, where he is a renowned pioneer. His company, Thai
Open Source Software Center, provides a legal framework for
various open source activities in Thailand. Clark also
promotes open source in the Software Industry Promotion Agency
of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology in
Thailand.
-- Doron Gerstel -- Syneron Medical Ltd, President -- As former
CEO and President, Gerstel co-founded Zend in 2000 to
commercialize the solutions needed to make the PHP scripting
language viable in enterprise environments. He built Zend into
a market leader for the creation of modern open source web
applications with 20,000 customers worldwide and is
well-renowned for his creation of a collaborative business
model, the centerpiece of which was the development of an
"eco-system" with customers and strategic partners including
IBM, Oracle, SAP, and Intel. Gerstel serves on the advisory
board of Fritz, Inc. (acquired by UPS), the third largest
logistics provider in the U.S.
-- Sanjiva Weerawarana -- WSO2, Founder, Chairman and CEO --
Weerawarana lead the development of the Web services platform
while at IBM and was a founder of Apache Software Foundation's
Web services efforts. Weerawarana is the founder of the Lanka
Software Foundation, is a member of the Apache Software
Foundation and is also a Board Member of the Open Source
Initiative. He's also a visiting professor at University of
Moratuwa in Sri Lanka.
-- Pradeep Tagare (Observer) -- Intel Capital, Sr. Investment
Manager -- Pradeep focuses on investments in the enterprise
software space. Prior to joining Intel, he served as
Founder/CEO and later VP Products at Yopa Inc, a
venture-backed company that developed a mobile applications
software platform.
Members of WSO2's Advisor Board include:
-- Larry Augustin -- Investor/Advisor -- One of the group that
coined the term "Open Source," Augustin was the visionary
behind SourceForge.net, the largest open source development
site on the Internet. He currently serves on the boards of
directors of Fonality, Hyperic, Medsphere, OSDL, Pentaho,
SugarCRM, VA Software and XenSource.
-- Brian Behlendorf -- CollabNet, Founder and CTO -- Behlendorf
is a leader in the international open source software movement
and currently serves as director of the Mozilla Foundation. He
was a primary developer of the Apache Web server and was a
founding member of the Apache Group, which later became the
Apache Software Foundation. Behlendorf served as president of
the foundation, was on its board as well as on the Board of
the Open Source Initiative.
-- Patrick Grady -- Reardon Commerce, Chairman and CEO --
Recognized as a pioneer in Web services and on-demand
technologies, Grady spent years in various venture capital,
private equity and operational roles in the technology market,
leading investments in start-ups within the software,
wireless, high-performance computing and networking sectors.
-- Tim O'Reilly -- O'Reilly Media, Founder -- O'Reilly's current
passion is understanding just how open source is changing the
computing landscape, leading to the commoditization of the
software infrastructure and the creation of a new kind of
value in what he calls Web 2.0, the Internet as platform. He
is a member of the Board of CollabNet, and was on the board of
Macromedia until its merger with Adobe.
-- Tony Pizi -- Level8, CIO -- Pizi possesses in-depth expertise
in technology and the management of innovation. He is an
innovator who developed the fundamental patent that forms the
foundation for Cicero, Level 8's flagship product, a patent
for Distributed Adaptive Computing, and also developed several
other patents pending. Prior to joining Level 8, he was the
first VP and CTO of the Merrill Lynch Private Client
Architecture Group.
WSO2 recently announced $4 million in initial funding from Intel
Capital and launched its first product, Tungsten, the first open
source application server designed to fully support Web services in a
simple, clean, lightweight model that cuts out the unnecessary layers
that complicate competing products.
