Microban Survey Reveals Spanish and Italian Consumers Lead European Interest in Antibacterial Products

Spanish and Italian consumers are Europe´s most enthusiastic about products that use antibacterial technology, according to a new survey of five countries.

When asked whether they would prefer to buy products with antibacterial benefits, 86% of Spanish consumers agree or strongly agree, followed by 82% in Italy, 72% in the UK, 66% in France and 59% in Germany.

Similarly, when asked whether they believe antibacterial products bring important benefits to customers, 90% of Italians agree or strongly agree, compared to 82% of respondents in the UK, 81% in Italy, 69% in Germany and 68% in France.

The survey was carried out by market research specialists Toluna Omnibus for the world market leader in antibacterial technology Microban, as it opens a new office in Paris to serve the French and Iberian markets.

Paul McDonnell, managing director at Microban Europe, said: "The research shows that there is wide enthusiasm for antibacterial technology among consumers right across Europe. However, it is interesting to note the variations in different countries.

"In countries with higher temperatures, there is more of a consumer focus on food and kitchen hygiene as well as on clothing textiles to prevent sweat odours. Therefore, there is a natural interest in using antibacterial technology."

Microban offers a range of more than 20 different antibacterial technologies that can be built into everything from fabrics to ceramics, holds more than 100 patents and conducts more than 40,000 laboratory tests annually to underpin technical efficacy.

On untreated surfaces, bacteria can potentially double in number in 20 minutes but Microban disrupts their functioning, usually causing them to die within 24 hours.

The company has licensed its technologies to more than 250 partners including Whirlpool, Bissell, Rubbermaid, Tefal, Dupont® Reebok and many others who have incorporated Microban antibacterial protection into more than 1,000 products.
