New prosecutor seeks to stop Chevron Brazil ops


    RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - A new Brazilian prosecutor on the case against U.S. oil company Chevron Corp and drilling firm Transocean Ltd for an offshore oil spill said Thursday he will seek to suspend the companies' operation in the country.

    Three of the main cases filed against the two companies for a November oil spill in the Frade field were recently stripped from the crusading prosecutor Eduardo Santos de Oliveira, who had filed them.

    And a court had already turned down a similar injunction, filed by a separate prosecutor in a different jurisdiction, on April 11.

    The action by a new prosecutor now involved in the case is a sign that aggressive pursuit of the companies in the local courts for the spill has not subsided.
