Sumitomo Electric Announces Development of New Optical Device for FTTH

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (SEI) (TOKYO:5802)
(ISIN:JP3407400005), today announced the succession in the development
of Optical Device for FTTH Bi-Directional transmission. The market can
take advantage of products that harness SEI´s leadership in optical
    solutions. These product offerings include:

    -- Diplexer for G-PON OLT (SXT4472 series),

    -- Triplexer for G-PON ONU (SXT9241 series),

    -- Bi-Dirctional Optical Subassembly (BOSA) for Point-to-Point
    Application (SXT6030 series).

All of these optical device series are fully RoHS compliant
    supporting environmental initiatives.

    The FTTH Market

The FTTH market continues to grow globally as customers require
increased bandwidth. This demand is driving the need for carriers to
upgrade from B-PON to G-PON. When comparing B-PON devices to G-PONs.
G-PONs require high output optical power, improved receiver
sensitivity and high performance transimpedance amplifier (TIA). And
for Point-to-Point Application, small size package is quite preferable
for small form modules. To satisfy these requirements, SEI is
vertically integrated with O-E devices and has developed very good
in-house packaging technology. "Our packaging technology improves
reliability and contributes to smaller package size and lower
manufacturing cost." said Ichiro Kono, General Manager of SEI´s
    Optical Transmission Components Division.

    FTTH Product Features

    (1) Burst mode technology: The SXT4472 series corresponds with
burst mode signal that is required at G-PON OLT´s. The SXT4472 series
are equipped with the reset terminal pin for responding to the burst
signal within a very short period.

    (2) One Package Technology: The SXT4472 and 9241 series utilize
in-house package technology. Those include the Laser Diode, Monitor
PD, APD, TIA and WDM filter. These are all assembled into a TO-56
package together. This structure enables miniaturization and
    cost-competitiveness.

SEI is releasing three Bi-Directional modules in the SXT4000, 6000
    and 9000 series:

    (1) SXT4472 series: G-PON ONT Diplexer; ITU G.984.2 Class B+

    (2) SXT6030 series: BOSA, IEEE802.3ah

    (3) SXT9241 series: G-PON ONU Triplexer, ITU G.984.2 Class B+

The SXT4472, 6030 and 9241 series will be displayed at the
    ExceLight/Sumitomo Electric booth (#2135) during OFC/NFOEC 2008,
February 26 to 28 in San Diego, California.
