Turkish headscarf reform passes first vote


    ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey's parliament approved in a first round of voting on Thursday an amendment to the constitution permitting women students to wear the Muslim headscarf at university.

    The amendment, deeply opposed by the secular establishment,will go to a final round of voting on Saturday. It is expectedto be approved because of the number of seats held by theIslamist-rooted ruling AK Party and the opposition MHP whichboth back the change.
