NextWave Wireless and EB Collaborate to Develop Innovative Mobile WiMAX Handset Reference Design
NextWave Wireless Inc. (NASDAQ: WAVE), a global provider of mobile
multimedia and wireless broadband technologies and EB (OMX: EBG1V), a
technology powerhouse with more than 20 years experience in solutions
for wireless and automotive industries, have decided to collaborate to
bring one of the first commercial mobile WiMAX handset reference
designs to the global market for wide-scale deployment. The device
will debut next week at the 2008 GSMA Mobile World Congress in
Barcelona.
EB and NextWave Wireless have developed a complete reference
design based on NextWave Wireless´ first-generation WiMAX chipset.
Together, EB and NextWave Wireless will provide wireless device
manufacturers the opportunity to bring mobile WiMAX products to market
faster, and with lower development costs.
Core to this cooperation are innovations such as cutting-edge 4G
wireless silicon from NextWave, and compact handset form-factor and
unique reference design integration expertise from EB. This synergy
enables rich capabilities, including carrier-grade VoIP (Voice over
Internet Protocol) and high-speed multimedia services on a
consumer-friendly device.
"Through our collaboration, NextWave Wireless has successfully
demonstrated VoIP calling over mobile WiMAX in a handset form-factor,"
said Arto Pietila, executive vice president, EB Mobile Terminal
Solutions. "This project demonstrates EB´s ability to turn
next-generation wireless technologies into enriching end-user
experiences."
As the main platform integrator, EB´s role includes platform
specification, hardware development, form-factor mechanical design,
antennae specification, software configuration and integration of 3rd
party components. EB´s end-to-end expertise in mobile WiMAX, from
network elements to handsets and air-interface testing, makes EB the
ideal development partner within the industry.
The handset reference design uses NextWave Wireless´ NW1100 WiMAX
baseband mobile subscriber SoC (System on a Chip) band and its
companion multi-band RFIC (Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit), the
NW1200. The handset reference design has been developed to provide
customers with an ultra-low-power, integrated mobile WiMAX solution
for improved performance, reduced power consumption, advanced
multimedia application usage, and seamless operation and roaming
across major global WiMAX spectrum allocations, including 2.3 ~ 2.7
GHz and 3.4 ~ 3.8 GHz, and their local variations such as the WCS
(Wireless Communications Service) and EBS/BRS (Educational Broadband
Service/Broadband Radio Service) bands in America.
"Creating a powerful off-the-shelf solution for WiMAX network
operators is just part of NextWave´s strategy for accelerating
deployment of mobile WiMAX services," said James Brailean, CEO, Mobile
Products Division, NextWave Wireless. "With EB, we´ve addressed two
critical issues for network operators: time-to-market and a
differentiating handset solution."
Technical demonstrations of the NextWave Wireless/EB mobile WiMAX
reference design will be offered by appointment-only at NextWave´s
stand at the upcoming 2008 GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona
(February 11-14, 2008). (www.mobileworldcongress.com/homepage.htm).
