im3D Selected as Entrepreneurial Company of the Year by Frost & Sullivan
im3D - Medical Imaging Lab, a research center based in Torino,
Italy that collaborates closely with medical and clinical specialists
worldwide to develop advanced medical imaging solutions, announced
today that it has been selected as the Entrepreneurial Company of the
Year 2007 by Frost & Sullivan, a global growth consulting company that
has been partnering with clients to support the development of
innovative strategies for more than 40 years. The award recognizes
im3D's state of the art product offering, strategic partnerships and
technology competencies, as well as the Company's contribution in the
European Computer Aided Detection Market. im3D's first commercial
product, the CAD-COLON diagnostic system, supports medical specialists
in the early diagnosis and prevention of colorectal tumors by
increasing diagnostic accuracy and reducing overall reading times.
CAD-COLON, considered an evolution of virtual colonoscopy, is a
fast, intuitive and extremely accurate diagnostic system which
utilizes CT scans of a patient's abdomen and pelvis to create a 3-D
model of the patient's colon in which suspect areas are automatically
identified and highlighted. CAD-COLON is the result of over 5 years of
multidisciplinary research conducted in Italy by im3D - Medical
Imaging Lab, with contribution of clinical partners including IRCC -
Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (Candiolo) and ISI
Foundation - Institute for Scientific Interchange (Torino), and is
primarily used within the following clinical contexts:
-- As a prevention test in at-risk patients (family history of
colon cancer)
-- As a follow-up tool for examining post-op patients
-- As a training system for the continuing education and
formation of young specialists
-- As a support system for endoscopic probing and polyp removal
-- As a viable alternative in cases when endoscopies are not
feasible due to occlusions or malformations
"The use of CAD in virtual colonoscopy is gaining wide approval as
a convenient and very accurate screening tool for colorectal cancer
because the CAD algorithms automatically process the raw VC images
thereby increasing the overall efficiency of the radiologist,"
explains Frost & Sullivan Research Manager Siddharth Saha. "im3D was
selected as Frost & Sullivan's 2007 Entrepreneurial Company of the
Year based on its advanced medical imaging technology and strong sense
of research."
Colon cancer is the second largest cause of cancer-related deaths
in the western world in both males (after lung cancer) and females
(after breast cancer). The characteristics of this disease (family
history/familial, absence of symptoms and increased risk for patients
over 50) make prevention the most important weapon for hindering the
onset of colorectal cancer in medium-to-high risk patients.
