China Telecom Subsidiary Selects Redback Networks for Its Next-Generation Triple-Play Network
Redback Networks Inc., an Ericsson company that makes
video-centric routers for 75 percent of the world's largest
triple-play networks, today announced that Jiangsu Telecom, an
independently-run subsidiary of China Telecom, has deployed its
SmartEdge(R) 800 multi-service edge routing platform for IPTV,
broadband-on-demand and other triple-play services.
Jiangsu Telecom is one of the largest provincial telecom operators
of China Telecom, serving more than 3.3 million broadband subscribers.
Jiangsu Telecom expects that the upcoming 2008 Beijing Olympics and
new domestic demands for IPTV services will drive significant
subscriber growth for triple-play services. Jiangsu Telecom chose
Redback Networks after an in-depth market study and vendor evaluation.
"SmartEdge is a very scalable router platform that can deliver
multiple broadband services," said Simon Williams, vice president of
sales and operations in Asia at Redback Networks. "The SmartEdge
multi-service edge router uses a converged network architecture,
programmable processors and modular software to deliver any
combination of data, voice and video services."
In China, there are more than 30 million broadband subscribers.
Redback has deployed its SmartEdge router platform with the top
provincial telephone carriers in 22 of 32 Chinese provinces. For China
Telecom, this includes provincial carriers in Guangdong, Zhejiang,
Fujian, Anhui, Hubei, Jiangxi, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Heilongjiang
and Tibet. For China Netcom, this includes similar deployments in
Shandong, Liaoning, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Henan, Shanxi, Inner
Mongolia, Zhejiang, Chongqing and Yunnan.
