Aeroports De Paris Launches ' L'ecole Des Vacances ' and Presents the Findings of a Survey on the New Desires of French Vacationers for Summer Holiday 2007
As nearly 80% of French people claim they want to learn during
their holiday*, Boutique Aeroports de Paris launches "l'ecole de
vacances", a new concept for quick learning before boarding. This
summer, all the 80 concessionnaires in association with information
staff at both Paris airports will offer, for the first time,
collective classes in the terminals to the 15 million passengers
expected this summer!
" Today, holiday-takers are seeking new learning experiences. For
60%** of them, holidays start at the airport. They expect us to give
them the opportunity to learn and to have fun in our terminals. With
"l'ecole des vacances", we would like to offer our clients a pleasant
experience which mixes culture, relaxation and encounters on the
occasion of summer holiday departures" said Francois Rubichon, Chief
Operating Officer of Aeroports de Paris.
Free, the workshops of "l'Ecole des vacances" are conducted by
experts who take care of passengers in the boarding lounges of
Paris-Orly and Paris-Charles de Gaulle airports. In 10 to 15 minutes,
the trainers of "l'Ecole des Vacances" will initiate vacationers to
different activities regarding culture, health, nutrition or
relaxation.

The new desires of French people for their holidays
Idleness is no longer in!
To design the program of "l'Ecole des Vacances", Aeroports de
Paris conducted a survey*** about the new desires of French people for
their holidays. This sociological survey was conducted among roughly
1000 people* in May 2007, with IFOP, Added Value agency and
sociologists Rachid Amirou, Andre Rauch and Jean-Pierre
Lozato-Giotart.
1st finding: 79% of French people want to learn new things
and acquire new know-how during their holiday
The survey reveals that the summer 2007 holiday-takers are eager
to learn. 79% of the French interviewed said " they want to learn
something during their vacation ". 72% of them wish to enrich their
knowledge. Rachid Amirou, researcher and expert in tourism, highlights
that " summer vacations are the time to express a real desire for
learning; it is an exceptional time which gives a unique opportunity
to explore new territories and to come back with new knowledge. This
knowledge is associated to an idea of pleasure: fun learning. "
Learning activities, an opportunity to break from daily routine
Holidays are associated with a disconnection from daily routine;
they imply a change and a voluntary loss of social bearings, a true
break from every day habits. For 69% of the people interviewed,
vacations are the occasion to learn things they do not have the
opportunity to learn in their every day life. (practice of extreme
sports, flight in a hot air balloon). Holidays are hence associated
with experiments, unexpectedness and discovery. "it is the fantasy of
paradise, of elsewhere; it is an old belief which goes back to 12th
century expeditions" reminds Rachid Amirou.
*national sample of people aged 15 and more
2nd finding : holidays help to make the after-holiday period
successful
" To come back looking great ", " to come back fit ". From the
time they start preparing for their holiday French people anticipate
on the benefit they would have acquired when they return. 66% of the
people interviewed want to come back from their vacation transformed,
with a new state of mind.
According to Rachid Amirou, " what is important, it's the return,
it's the result. The notion of departure must always be expressed
through an enrichment of some kind, a plus, an improvement. "
The idea of rest during vacation time is no longer enough and
total idleness is no longer enhancive. 74% of French people want to
practice a cultural, fitness or fun activity during their holiday.
Leisure vacations have thus been replaced by fitness or cultural
vacations which offer a personal enrichment.
Moreover, " passive " organized holidays have been replaced by
" active " vacations which enable to live an exceptional experience.
For 55% of the people surveyed, it is important to have something to
talk about when they come back from vacation and to share their
experience with others. This motivation is essential in the choice of
their vacation.
New tendency : to use vacation time to enhance one's professional
career growth
Nowadays, the French tend to use their holidays for professional
training. This self-directed learning period is halfway between
private life and professional career. It is often materialized through
linguistic trips or the acquisition of new useful competences for
one's professional career growth (computing, flying lessons...).
Summer 2007 vacationers profiles
For their next summer vacation, the French have chosen to learn
new things. Based on this finding, the survey highlights three new
profiles for vacationers this summer.
The active vacationer : the quest for knowledge
72% of French people are active vacationers. They expect to reach
intellectual and personal enrichment through their holiday.
69% wish to learn unusual things: discover foreign cultures,
experience new flavors, new recipes (54%)
The notion of enrichment has become essential: 87% of the people
surveyed said they wanted to come back from their vacation with a lot
of memories and 79% with new things they have learned.
The social vacationer: the discovery of other people
This strong tendency, expressed by the experts and confirmed by
the survey, concerns the strong need of French people to establish new
social links."Vacations mark the time when we enter a different sphere
of our sociality" (A. Rauch). To develop social links is to open up to
others as much as to take advantage of our close relatives :
-- Meet new people (86%): we meet people with the aim to build
new social ties and adopt other behaviors (mimicry phenomenon:
"The tourists are always the others". J.P. Lozato-Giotart)).
Tighten ties with relatives and friends (78%) : we take advantage
of our vacations to get to know better the people we do not see on a
daily basis.
The zen vacationer : learn how to pamper oneself
The search for rest is, nowadays, rather based on psychological
well-being which above all rests upon a break from daily routine (for
87% of the people interviewed). Beyond the need to change our
surrounding, the break is mainly to :
Learn to live at one's own pace (89%) and get rid of daily
constraints : we eat at any time, we sleep at any time,..."We take a
break from social rythms (...) it is a praising of individual rythm"
(A. Rauch)
Learn how to take time for oneself (72%) : take time to think
about oneself, offer oneself a moment, listen to oneself (body,
desires)
