Market adds losses after sentiment data

Wall Street was already weak ahead of the data after disappointing results from bellwethers Microsoft Corp and American Express Co .

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 53.89 points, or 0.59 percent, at 9,015.40. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 7.96 points, or 0.82 percent, at 968.33. The Nasdaq Composite Index slid 32.79 points, or 1.66 percent, at 1,940.81.

Microsoft shares were off about 10 percent to $23.04 on Nasdaq, while American Express shed 3 percent to $28.54.
