Japan to aim for 15 percent carbon cut from 2005 level: NHK

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso is likely to announce that Japan, the world's fifth-biggest greenhouse gas emitter, will cut emissions by 15 percent by 2020 from 2005 levels, national broadcaster NHK reported on Wednesday.

Aso's government has been looking at six options for how and how much to cut emissions by 2020 in Japan, ranging from minus 4 percent to minus 30 percent from 2005 levels.

A 15 percent cut from 2005 would be a slightly bigger cut that the minus 14 percent option -- equivalent to minus 7 percent from 1990 -- that media had reported as the most likely scenario.

Aso is set to hold a news conference to announce Japan's 2020 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target at 5 a.m. EDT.
