Martinelli ahead in Panama presidential election

PANAMA CITY (Reuters) - Multimillionaire supermarket magnate Ricardo Martinelli took an early lead in Panama's presidential election on Sunday, according to early partial returns from the electoral tribunal.

With votes counted from more than 10 percent of the polling stations, conservative Martinelli had 59.74 percent, while rival Balbina Herrera had 37.73 percent, the returns showed.

If he wins, Martinelli's victory will buck the trend of left-wing leadership wins in Latin America in recent years.
