Wall Street set to extend losses
At 6:15 a.m. EDT, futures for the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq were down 0.5-0.9 percent.
The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was down 1.3 percent, tracking Wall Street's losses on Thursday. Banks were the biggest fallers.
The Dow Jones industrial average and Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost 1.2 and 1.3 percent respectively, on Thursday.
Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke speaks on "The Financial Crisis and Community Banking" in Phoenix at 12 p.m. EDT.
The Economic Cycle Research Institute index is due at 10:30 a.m. EDT. It fell to a 14-year low last week.
There are no major U.S. companies due to report.
