Japan to lend $5 billion for green development: report

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan will lend 490 billion yen ($5 billion) to developing nations to put in place running water, solar power systems and other environmental infrastructure, the Nikkei business daily reported on Saturday.

Through the state-backed Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Tokyo aims to offer the money over the next two years for large projects undertaken by the private sector, the Nikkei said.

The government plans to grant funds for electricity generating ventures such as solar power systems, water-related projects such as sewage systems and water treatment equipment, and metropolitan public transportation systems that will help cut carbon dioxide emissions, the paper said.

Developing nations have tapped U.S. and European financial institutions to finance public projects, but these lenders have been pulling out in the wake of the global financial turmoil.
