Stocks slide as economic worry weighs


    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks slid on Tuesday, hurt by a sharp pullback in commodity shares due to concerns that the global economy might be spiraling into recession, dimming profit prospects.

    Shares of energy companies, including Exxon Mobil Corp, which was off more than 6 percent, weighed on the broader market, along with those of miners and other natural resource companies, including aluminum producer Alcoa, down more than 3 percent.

    The Dow Jones industrial average was down 177.06 points, or 1.91 percent, at 9,088.37. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 22.40 points, or 2.27 percent, at 963.00. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 41.86 points, or 2.36 percent, at 1,728.17.
