U.S. does "not anticipate" tougher carbon target


    COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - The United States does not anticipate sharpening its target to cut carbon emissions by 2020, said Todd Stern, U.S. special envoy for climate change, on Tuesday.

    U.S. President Barack Obama has proposed a TARGET (TGT.NY)to cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent versus 2005 levels by 2020. Stern did not "anticipate any change" in that commitment, he told reporters.

    The European Union has said it would only toughen its own target if the United States offers more in Copenhagen, at a December 7-18 U.N. climate conference, where Obama arrives early Friday.
