Nikkei soars over 13 percent, buoyed by government steps



    TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei stock average soared more than 13 percent on Tuesday, with investors taking heart from pledges by authorities worldwide to pour cash into struggling banks.

    The benchmark NIKKEI (NIKKEI225.) ended the morning up 13.04 percent, erasing losses on Friday when it posted its biggest one-day loss since the 1987 stock market crash.

    It rose 1,079.13 to 9,355.56.

    The broader Topix rose 12.7 percent to 947.47, a gain of more than 100 points.
