Market briefly extends gains after data



    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks briefly extended gains with the S&P 500 rising 1 percent on Thursday after data showed U.S. manufacturing activity rose to its highest level since 2004.

    The Dow Jones industrial average was up 96.59 points, or 0.89 percent, at 10,953.22. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 11.28 points, or 0.96 percent, at 1,180.71. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 22.63 points, or 0.94 percent, at 2,420.59.
