Canada motion wins enough votes to defeat government


    OTTAWA (Reuters) - An opposition motion of non-confidence in Canada's minority Conservative government gained enough votes to pass on Friday, heralding the government's imminent defeat and start of an election campaign.

    The Conservatives and their allies can muster a maximum of 145 votes in the House of Commons. By 2:17 Eastern (6:17 p.m. British time), 146 opposition legislators had voted in favour of the motion.

    The Conservatives will start voting once the opposition has finished. A final result of the vote is expected shortly.
