Hurricane Irene downgraded to tropical storm


    MIAMI (Reuters) - Hurricane Irene weakened as it pushed into New York on Sunday and was downgraded to tropical storm status, the National Hurricane Centre said.

    After battering the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast with hurricane power, Irene's winds dropped to 65 mph/100 kmh by 9 a.m., the centre said.
