New Zealand earthquake kills 17 - civil defence head

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - The earthquake which struck the New Zealand city of Christchurch has killed at least 17 people, the head of civil defence said on Tuesday.

John Hamilton told local media that there were 17 confirmed deaths and the country had to be prepared for more.
