India PM may be admitted to hospital

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh could be admitted to hospital Friday for surgery, an government official said, after medical tests showed blockages were found in his arteries.

"It has to be seen what is needed, whether bypass surgery or angioplasty. The doctors are looking at all options," an official at the prime minister's office told Reuters.

A doctor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences also told Reuters Thursday blockages were discovered and a second cardiac bypass surgery could be an option.

Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee could take over prime ministerial responsibilities while Singh was recovering from any surgery, a foreign ministry official said.
