AgION Antimicrobial Effective Against H5N1 Avian Flu Virus

AgION Technologies Europe today released laboratory results
showing that the company's silver-based antimicrobial technology
inactivates the H5N1 avian influenza virus in 10 minutes, positioning
the product as one of the few solutions available to reduce the spread
of avian flu. These new laboratory results complement earlier studies
showing similar findings for AgION antimicrobials against the SARS and
    Norwalk viruses.

"To prevent the spread of avian flu throughout the world, it is
essential that a range of innovative measures are investigated and
implemented," said Stuart R. Patterson, Chief Executive Officer of
AgION Technologies. "Vaccines and containment procedures are part of
the equation, certainly, but true prevention must incorporate several
levels of protection. AgION's antimicrobial technology is designed to
coat or be incorporated into a range of products and fixtures - from
keyboards to air filters - to provide continuous, long-term protection
from harmful pathogens. The lab results indicate that our technology
could be a very powerful tool in controlling microbial contamination
and reducing the spread of deadly diseases like avian flu."

H5N1 is a highly pathogenic virus. According to the World Health
Organization, there have been 252 confirmed human cases of avian flu
caused by the H5N1 virus and 148 deaths.

As China is one of the few countries in the world where the virus
is available for testing, this laboratory test was conducted at the
Veterinary Research Institute of China Agricultural Scientific Academy
& Animal Flu Key-Point Open Lab and National Bird Flu Reference Lab of
the Ministry of Agriculture. As part of the test, six solutions of
different dilute concentrations of the AgION antimicrobial were
allowed to act on H5N1 for 10 minutes. Two of the concentrations were
effective against H5N1, one inactivating 99 percent of the virus
within 10 minutes, the other concentration inactivating 100 percent of
    the virus within 10 minutes.

AgION's antimicrobial has been proven effective against some of
the most concerning bacteria and viruses in the world, yet as it is
comprised of naturally occurring silver ions, it is safe for human
contact and does not add potentially harmful chemicals to the
environment. Also, unlike less effective antimicrobials, AgION's
antimicrobial provides ongoing protection from microbes by releasing
silver ions to the surface at a slow and steady rate. With this in
mind, in addition to inactivating H5N1 within ten minutes, the AgION
antimicrobial can provide continuous, long-term protection from the
    virus.

AgION's technology can be incorporated into or used to coat a
variety of surfaces including architectural elements, food and water
contact surfaces, fibers and textiles, and environmental surfaces in
transportation, commercial and hospital settings. It can already be
found in a variety of products, such as cell phones, office supplies,
water and air filters, face masks, flooring, clothing and medical
    devices.

Patterson continued, "We must try to protect against all the ways
pathogens such as H5N1 can be spread. The SARS outbreak demonstrated
the role that surfaces can play in the spread of disease. Studies of
quarantined SARS hospitals, for example, showed that healthy
individuals were exposed to the virus via common objects such as
elevator handrails, desks, pens and doorknobs. Environmental
components such as HVAC systems can also contribute to the
dissemination of pathogens that are spread through the air. AgION's
technology has the potential to be a powerful tool against the spread
    of such diseases."

AgION's method of controlling the spread of viruses on surfaces in
a unique combination of ions and ion-release mechanism is patent
pending. AgION's technology has broad regulatory approval worldwide
and is one of the few antimicrobials that is completely safe for human
    and food contact.
