Austrian conservatives pick Schelling as finance minister - media

VIENNA (Reuters) - Austria's conservative People's Party (OVP) on Sunday chose as finance minister Hans Joerg Schelling, several media outlets reported from a party leadership conference in Linz.

The OVP, junior partners in a coalition with Social Democrats, had to pick a replacement for Michael Spindelegger, who quit last week in a row over tax reform.

Schelling, 60, a millionaire who made a name for himself by whipping the country's social security network into shape, is deputy head of the influential Economic Chamber business lobby, which is traditionally close to the OVP.

He is a marketing expert and former management consultant who has led two big home furnishing chains.
