American Science and Engineering, Inc. Introduces Gemini Parcel Inspection System; First Order Received from the U.S. Government to Protect High-threat Facility

American Science and Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASEI)
(AS&E(R)), a leader in X-ray detection technology, announced today the
launch of Gemini(TM), the industry's most complete non-intrusive
parcel inspection system for detecting security threats and contraband
in parcels, baggage, and mail. Gemini enables security authorities to
easily detect weapons, explosives, and drugs, and is ideal for use in
high-threat government facilities, airports, and other
    security-sensitive areas.
"With the introduction of Gemini, we are offering the most
comprehensive, advanced contraband and threat detection system for
parcels on the market today," said Robert Postle, AS&E's Vice
President of Worldwide Marketing and Sales. "We are pleased to receive
the initial order for Gemini from a U.S. Government agency to protect
their high-threat facility. The combination of Z(R) Backscatter(TM)
and dual-energy technologies provides security officials the most
reliable means to detect threatening materials such as guns, IEDs, and
plastic explosives -- an essential tool to protect facilities where
superior detection is a requirement. This latest parcel product is the
    lowest cost multi-technology system available."

    Unique Combination of Dual-Energy and Z(R) Backscatter(TM)

Gemini is the first conventional parcel inspection system on the
market to combine dual-energy transmission and proprietary Z
Backscatter X-rays, allowing operators to obtain the most information
about the contents of a parcel. Operators simultaneously view two
images, a Z Backscatter image and a dual-energy image, dramatically
increasing the likelihood of finding illegal materials hidden in
    parcels.
Dual-energy transmission provides outstanding image quality, and
enables the quick detection of a wide variety of threats such as guns,
knives, and wires for IEDs. In addition, dual-energy offers organic
and metallic discrimination in uncluttered environments. AS&E's
patented Z Backscatter technology provides exceptional detection of
organic materials, such as explosives and narcotics, which are easily
missed by transmission-only systems in cluttered parcels. Z
Backscatter's photo-like images are easy to interpret, thereby
speeding analysis time and reducing operator fatigue.
