U.S. manufacturing sector grows, speed slows: ISM

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The pace of growth in the U.S. manufacturing sector unexpectedly slowed in May, an industry report released on Monday showed.

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said its index of national factory activity fell to 53.2 last month from 54.9 in April, coming in shy of the 55.5 expected according to a Reuters poll of economists.

A reading above 50 indicates expansion.

The employment subindex dropped to 51.9 in May from 54.7 the prior month and also missed the expectation for 55.0, while the gauge of prices paid accelerated to 60.0 from 56.5 and was above the 57.0 forecast.

New orders fell to 53.3 from 55.1.
