Monster Employment Index Europe Dips in April 2008 due to Decline in Manufacturing Sector

April 2008 Index Highlights:

The Index dipped five points to a level of 165 in April as online job

availability across the European Union fell back slightly following

two months of growth.

Year-on-year, the Index was up 32 points or 24 percent, indicating

sustained underlying growth in European hiring activity.

Opportunities fell the most in the Environment, architecture

urbanism; Marketing, PR and media; and Production, manufacturing

maintenance & repair sectors this month.

Hospitality and tourism sector, by contrast, saw a large increase

fuelled by intense pre-summer recruitment.

Among occupational groups, Plant and machine operators and assemblers

registered the largest decrease amid lower demand for Production and

construction workers.

France was the only monitored country to see a small rise in demand.

Year-on-year, the UK saw the highest growth while only Belgium

registered a downturn in online vacancies.

Summary Overview
The Monster Employment Index Europe dipped by five point points in

April, as online job opportunities decreased across the European Union

primarily due to a decline in the manufacturing sector. The Monster

Employment Index Europe is a monthly analysis of millions of online job

opportunities culled from a large, representative selection of corporate

career sites and job boards across Europe, including Monster.
During April, a majority of industry and occupational categories tracked

showed a decrease in online job demand, with 21 out of 24 industry

sectors and 6 out of 9 occupational groups registering a fall. The
